How to Calculate How Much Sand You Need
The sand calculation starts with simple geometry: multiply the project area by the fill depth to get volume in cubic feet, then convert to cubic yards (the standard bulk-order unit) by dividing by 27. Weight is derived by multiplying volume by the sand's density, and the bag count is the total weight divided by the per-bag weight, rounded up to the nearest whole bag.
Step 1 — Cubic Feet:
Rectangle: Cubic ft = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth (in) ÷ 12)
Circle: Cubic ft = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × (Depth (in) ÷ 12)
Step 2 — Cubic Yards:
Cubic yd = Cubic ft ÷ 27
Step 3 — Weight:
Tons (US) = Cubic yd × Density (lb/yd³) ÷ 2,000
Step 4 — Bags (50 lb):
Bags = ⌈ (Cubic ft × Density (lb/ft³)) ÷ 50 ⌉
Step 5 — Waste Factor:
Final Volume = Cubic yd × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
A 10 % waste factor is recommended for most projects to account for uneven ground, compaction, and minor spillage. For paver bases, some installers add up to 25 % extra.
| Sand Type | lb / yd³ | lb / ft³ | US tons / yd³ | 50 lb bags / yd³ |

| Dry sand (average) | 2,700 | 100 | 1.35 | 54 |
| Dry sand (packed) | 3,000 | 111 | 1.50 | 60 |
| Wet sand | 3,300 | 122 | 1.65 | 66 |
| Sand & gravel, dry | 2,900 | 107 | 1.45 | 58 |
| Sand & gravel, wet | 3,400 | 126 | 1.70 | 68 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cubic yards of sand do I need for a 10×10 ft area at 2 inches deep?
10 × 10 × (2÷12) = 16.67 ft³ ÷ 27 = 0.62 cubic yards. Adding a 10 % waste factor brings it to ~0.68 yd³. That equals roughly 34 × 50 lb bags.
How many 50 lb bags of sand are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard of average dry sand (2,700 lb/yd³) weighs 2,700 lbs. Dividing by 50 gives 54 bags per cubic yard. Wet or packed sand may require 60–68 bags for the same volume.
What is the difference between dry and wet sand density?
Dry sand ranges from 2,600–3,000 lb/yd³ depending on grain size and compaction. Wet sand holds moisture in the voids between grains and typically weighs 3,000–3,400 lb/yd³ — roughly 15–25 % heavier than dry.
Why should I add a waste factor?
Sand compacts once spread and tamped — typically 10–25 %. Uneven subgrades also consume extra material. A 10 % buffer is standard for leveling projects; paver base installations often use 15–25 %.
How much does a cubic yard of sand weigh in tons?
Average dry sand weighs about 1.35 US tons per cubic yard (2,700 lbs ÷ 2,000). Wet sand runs 1.5–1.7 tons/yd³. Always confirm density with your supplier, as local aggregate varies.
Can I use this calculator for paver base sand?
Yes. For a standard paver bedding layer, enter 1 inch depth and select "Dry Sand (avg)". A 200 sq ft patio at 1 inch depth requires approximately 0.62 yd³ before waste factor — about 34 bags.
