How to Calculate How Much Sand You Need

The sand calculation starts with simple geometry: multiply the project area by the fill depth to get volume in cubic feet, then convert to cubic yards (the standard bulk-order unit) by dividing by 27. Weight is derived by multiplying volume by the sand's density, and the bag count is the total weight divided by the per-bag weight, rounded up to the nearest whole bag.

Step 1 — Cubic Feet:

  Rectangle: Cubic ft = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Depth (in) ÷ 12)

  Circle:    Cubic ft = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)² × (Depth (in) ÷ 12)

Step 2 — Cubic Yards:

  Cubic yd = Cubic ft ÷ 27

Step 3 — Weight:

  Tons (US) = Cubic yd × Density (lb/yd³) ÷ 2,000

Step 4 — Bags (50 lb):
