How to Calculate Your Body Type
Calculating your body shape relies on the mathematical relationship and differences between your bust, waist, and hip measurements. The fashion industry generally classifies female body shapes into five primary categories: Hourglass, Pear (Triangle), Inverted Triangle, Rectangle (Straight), and Apple (Round). This calculator evaluates the differentials between your measurements to find your best fit.
- Hourglass = Bust & Hips are roughly equal; Waist is at least 7" smaller.
- Pear (Triangle) = Hips are significantly larger than the Bust.
- Inverted Triangle = Bust is significantly larger than the Hips.
- Rectangle (Straight) = Bust, Waist, and Hips have very similar measurements.
- Apple (Round) = Waist is larger than the Bust and Hips.
Note: Measurements can be entered in either inches or centimeters, as the algorithm relies entirely on proportional differences rather than absolute numerical values.
In addition to body shape, the calculator provides your Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR). This ratio is frequently used as a quick indicator of fat distribution and overall health. A WHR below 0.85 for women (or 0.90 for men) is generally considered an indicator of lower health risk.
| Body Shape | Defining Measurement Trait | Common Styling Goal |
|---|---|---|
| Hourglass | Defined waist; balanced top and bottom. | Accentuate the natural waistline. |
| Pear (Triangle) | Hips are wider than the shoulders/bust. | Add volume to the upper body to balance hips. |
| Inverted Triangle | Shoulders/bust are wider than the hips. | Add volume to the lower half to create curves. |
| Rectangle (Straight) | Little to no waist definition. | Create the illusion of curves using belts or peplums. |
| Apple (Round) | Weight is carried around the midsection. | Draw attention upward or downward to elongate. |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I accurately take my measurements?
For the most accurate results, use a soft, flexible measuring tape. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug, but not digging into your skin. Measure your Bust at the fullest part of your chest. Measure your Waist at its narrowest point (usually just above the belly button). Measure your Hips at the widest part of your buttocks.
Does my body type change if I lose or gain weight?
Generally, your underlying body type (which is heavily influenced by your skeletal structure and genetics) will remain the same regardless of weight fluctuations. An hourglass will likely remain an hourglass. However, significant weight changes can sometimes shift the proportional differences slightly, occasionally moving you into a neighboring category.
What is the most common body shape?
Despite the heavy media representation of the Hourglass figure, statistical studies of physical measurements show that the Rectangle (Straight) and Pear (Triangle) shapes are actually the most common body types among adult women.
