Frequently Asked Questions
Are points deducted for wrong multiple-choice answers?
No. The College Board eliminated the "guessing penalty" years ago. Your multiple-choice score is based strictly on the number of questions you answer correctly. You should never leave a question blank on the AP Lit exam.
How are the AP Literature essays (FRQs) scored?
Each of the three essays (Poetry Analysis, Prose Fiction Analysis, and Literary Argument) is scored on a 0-6 rubric. You can earn 1 point for the Thesis, up to 4 points for Evidence and Commentary, and 1 point for Sophistication.
Is this AP Lit score curve 100% accurate for the current year?
The calculator uses the most standard historical composite thresholds (e.g., ~114 points for a 5). The College Board adjusts this curve slightly every testing year depending on statistical performance data, meaning your actual score threshold might be a few points higher or lower.
