Understanding This Calculator

VO2 max — the maximum rate of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise — is widely considered the gold-standard measure of cardiovascular fitness. The Rockport Walk Test, developed at the University of Massachusetts and published in 1987, estimates it from a timed one-mile walk and your heart rate at the finish, without needing a treadmill or lab.

For a valid result, the mile must be walked (not run) as fast as possible on a flat, measured course, with heart rate taken immediately at the finish line.

VO2max = 132.853 − 0.0769W − 0.3877A + 6.315S − 3.2649T − 0.1565HR
  • W weight in pounds
  • A age in years
  • S sex: 1 = male, 0 = female
  • T walk time in minutes
  • HR heart rate at finish, bpm

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Rockport test compare to a lab VO2 max test?

It’s typically within ±10-15% of a true metabolic-cart treadmill test — good enough for tracking fitness trends, though not a substitute for clinical or elite athlete testing.

Do I need to run the mile for accuracy?

No — the test is specifically calibrated for brisk walking. Running invalidates the formula’s assumptions about heart rate and oxygen cost.
