How to Use the Roofing Square & Shingle Bundle Calculator (With Roof Pitch)
In the roofing industry, materials and labor are priced and ordered by the ‘Roofing Square’—where 1 square equals exactly 100 square feet of sloped roof surface area. Because a pitched roof has a longer diagonal rafter run than the flat ceiling below it, you must multiply your home’s ground-level footprint (including 12-to-24-inch eave overhangs) by the trigonometric Roof Pitch Multiplier before dividing by 100.
Formula and Calculation Methodology
- Footprint: Flat ground-level area of the building including eave and rake overhangs (sq ft)
- Pitch Multiplier: Secant slope factor √(1 + (Rise/12)²) that converts flat area to sloped roof surface
- 1 Roofing Square: Industry unit equal to exactly 100 square feet of roof surface (3 shingle bundles)
Standard architectural asphalt shingles (such as GAF Timberline HDZ or Owens Corning Duration) are packaged so that exactly 3 bundles cover 1 roofing square (33.3 sq ft per bundle). Always add 10% waste for a simple two-sided gable roof or 15% waste for complex hip roofs with valleys, dormers, and ridge caps.
Roof Pitch Multiplier & Shingle Bundle Reference Table
| Roof Pitch | Roof Angle (°) | Pitch Multiplier | Sloped Area on 2,000 sf Footprint | Squares (+10% Waste) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4/12 | 18.4° | 1.054x | 2,108 sq ft | 23.2 Squares (70 Bundles) |
| 5/12 | 22.6° | 1.083x | 2,166 sq ft | 23.8 Squares (72 Bundles) |
| 6/12 | 26.6° | 1.118x | 2,236 sq ft | 24.6 Squares (74 Bundles) |
| 8/12 | 33.7° | 1.202x | 2,404 sq ft | 26.4 Squares (80 Bundles) |
| 10/12 | 39.8° | 1.302x | 2,604 sq ft | 28.6 Squares (86 Bundles) |
| 12/12 | 45.0° | 1.414x | 2,828 sq ft | 31.1 Squares (94 Bundles) |
Frequently Asked Questions
How many square feet is 1 roofing square?
One roofing square is always equal to 100 square feet of roof area (a 10 ft × 10 ft section). A 2,400-square-foot roof equals 24 roofing squares.
How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three bundles of standard 3-tab or architectural asphalt shingles cover 1 roofing square (100 sq ft). Heavyweight luxury/designer shingles sometimes require 4 or 5 bundles per square.
Does my house’s heated square footage equal my roof square footage?
No. Your roof is significantly larger than your interior living area because it covers the garage, porches, eave overhangs, and gains additional surface area from the slope (pitch) of the rafters.
