Understanding This Calculator

Combat level in Old School RuneScape is a single number summarizing how tough your character is in a fight, derived from your Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, and Magic levels. It’s the value shown above every player’s head and it caps at 126 for a maxed combat account.

Unlike a simple average, the formula gives Melee, Ranged, and Magic their own separate “combat contribution,” then only the highest of the three counts toward your final level — so training all three attack styles equally doesn’t raise your combat level any faster than focusing on one.

Combat = floor(Base + max(Melee, Range, Mage))
  • Base 0.25 × (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer/2))
  • Melee 0.325 × (Attack + Strength)
  • Range 0.325 × floor(1.5 × Ranged)
  • Mage 0.325 × floor(1.5 × Magic)

This calculator uses OSRS’s publicly documented combat-level formula (widely published on community wikis); it performs only this factual math and does not reproduce any game text, art, or branding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does training Ranged or Magic alone raise my combat level fastest?

Because only the single highest of Melee, Range, or Mage counts toward your combat level, pure Ranged or Magic training reaches high combat contribution faster per level trained than splitting effort across all three combat styles.

What is the maximum possible combat level?

With every combat skill at 99 (Hitpoints starts at 10 and rises with Attack/Strength/Defence training), the formula produces a combat level of 126, the highest attainable in Old School RuneScape.
