Framing a wall correctly starts with knowing how much lumber to buy before you’re standing in the aisle at the lumberyard. This calculator applies the standard on-center spacing method used by residential framers to estimate the number of 2×4 or 2×6 studs a wall needs, then adds extra studs for corners and for door and window openings, where the framing has to double up to carry the load above the opening.
Getting the count close on the first trip saves time and reduces waste. Most contractors add a small buffer (5-10%) on top of the calculated number to account for cut mistakes, warped lumber, and blocking — factor that in separately when you place your order.

Why does 24″ on-center spacing use fewer studs?
Wider spacing means fewer vertical members are needed to span the same wall length. It’s common in advanced/optimal value framing for exterior walls with proper insulation and load calculations, but always check your local building code before using it on load-bearing walls.
Why do openings need 4 extra studs instead of 2?
Each rough opening typically needs a full-height “king” stud on each side plus a shorter “jack” (trimmer) stud on each side to support the header above the opening — four studs total per opening, in addition to the field studs already counted.
