How to Use the SHSAT Score Calculator (NYC Specialized High Schools Scaled Score)

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the sole competitive criterion for admission to eight of New York City's elite specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech.

Our SHSAT Score Calculator translates raw practice test scores across ELA and Math into an estimated scaled composite score out of 700, benchmarking your results directly against historical admissions cutoffs.

Formula and Calculation Methodology

SHSAT Composite Scaled Score = Scaled ELA Score (out of 350) + Scaled Math Score (out of 350)
  • 47 Scored Questions: Out of 57 total questions per section, exactly 10 are un-scored experimental field items
  • Non-Linear Curve: Scoring exceptionally high in one section awards a parabolic scaling bonus
  • Cutoff Scores: Historically range from ~470 (Brooklyn Latin) up to ~560+ (Stuyvesant)

Simulates the non-linear psychometric scaling curve established by the NYC Department of Education and psychometric testing benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the SHSAT?

The SHSAT has 114 total questions (57 ELA and 57 Math). However, in each section, exactly 10 questions are experimental field questions that are not scored. Your score is based on 47 scored items per section (94 total scored questions).

Is there a penalty for wrong answers on the SHSAT?

No! There is no negative marking or penalty for incorrect guesses on the SHSAT. Students should answer every single question before time expires.

Why does the SHSAT scoring curve favor 'lopsided' scores?

Due to the non-linear scaling curve used by the NYC Department of Education, near-perfect scores in one section (e.g. 46/47 in Math) receive an exponential scaling surge. Getting 46 Math and 30 ELA often produces a higher composite score than getting 38 in both.

What is the maximum possible score on the SHSAT?

The theoretical maximum score varies slightly each year depending on the test form calibration, but is generally around 700 to 715.

Can you take the SHSAT more than once?

Yes. Students take the SHSAT in 8th grade for 9th-grade admission. Students can also take the 9th-grade SHSAT in 9th grade for a limited number of 10th-grade seats.
