How to Use the Puppy Weight & Adult Dog Size Predictor

Predicting a puppy’s full-grown adult weight is crucial for planning nutritional calorie intake, sizing crates and harnesses, and preparing for veterinary care. However, canine growth does not follow a simple linear trajectory. Dogs experience a rapid sigmoid (S-shaped) growth acceleration between 8 and 20 weeks of age, followed by a gradual deceleration as their long-bone growth plates fuse.

Formula and Calculation Methodology

Adult Weight = (Current Puppy Weight ÷ Growth % for Age and Breed Classification)
  • Current Weight: Puppy body weight measured in pounds
  • Age in Weeks: Chronological age determining position along veterinary sigmoid growth curve
  • Growth Curve: Toy breeds achieve 90% weight at 7 months; giant breeds continue growing past 18 months

A common mistake is using the ‘double weight at 16 weeks’ rule indiscriminately. While doubling your puppy’s weight at 16 weeks works reasonably well for medium breeds (e.g. Australian Shepherds), it severely underestimates giant breeds like Great Danes (who grow until 2 years old) and overestimates toy breeds like Yorkies (who reach adult size by 9 months). Our calculator calibrates growth percentage dynamically against five distinct veterinary breed classifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age do puppies stop growing?

Small and toy dogs reach full skeletal and weight maturity between 9 and 12 months. Large and giant breeds continue filling out muscle mass and chest width until 18 to 24 months.

Can you predict adult dog size by paw size?

Paw size provides a rough visual clue, especially in large-breed puppies who often have disproportionately large paws while their skeleton catches up, but age-based weight curves are significantly more accurate.

Why is my puppy gaining weight faster than expected?

Puppies undergo growth spurts between 3 and 6 months. However, rapid overfeeding of high-calorie food in large-breed puppies can cause developmental orthopedic disease (such as hip dysplasia and osteochondrosis).
