How to Use the Miles Per Gallon (MPG) & Fuel Cost Calculator
To calculate your vehicle’s true real-world Miles Per Gallon (MPG), use the two-fill-up odometer method rather than relying on your fuel gauge needle. First, fill your gas tank completely until the pump clicks off and reset your trip odometer to zero (or write down your current odometer mileage). Drive normally until your tank is below half or quarter full, then refill the tank completely until the pump clicks off again.
Formula and Calculation Methodology
- Miles Driven: Total trip miles recorded on your trip odometer between full tank fill-ups
- Gallons Used: Exact gallons pumped at the second fill-up until the nozzle clicks off
- L/100km: Metric liters per 100 kilometers (equal to 235.215 divided by US MPG)
Divide the exact miles driven on your trip odometer by the number of gallons printed on your second gas receipt. For example, if you drove 345 miles and the pump took 11.8 gallons to refill the tank to the top, your real fuel economy is 345 ÷ 11.8 = 29.24 MPG. Dashboard trip computers often overestimate MPG by 1 to 2 MPG, making manual pump calculations the gold standard.
Annual Fuel Cost Comparison (15,000 Miles/Year at $3.50/Gallon)
| Vehicle MPG | Metric (L/100km) | Gallons Used / Year | Cost Per Mile | Annual Fuel Spend |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 MPG (Full-Size Truck/SUV) | 13.1 L/100km | 833 gal | $0.194 /mi | $2,917 /yr |
| 25 MPG (Midsize Crossover) | 9.4 L/100km | 600 gal | $0.140 /mi | $2,100 /yr |
| 32 MPG (Compact Sedan) | 7.4 L/100km | 469 gal | $0.109 /mi | $1,641 /yr |
| 48 MPG (Hybrid Vehicle) | 4.9 L/100km | 313 gal | $0.073 /mi | $1,094 /yr |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why shouldn’t I use my fuel tank’s total capacity to calculate MPG?
Even when the ‘Empty’ fuel light comes on, most cars hold 1.5 to 3.0 gallons of reserve fuel in the tank. Always divide miles driven by the actual gallons pumped on the receipt, not the tank’s rated size.
Why does my MPG drop in the winter?
Cold air is denser (increasing aerodynamic drag), engines take longer to reach optimal operating temperature, tire pressure drops in cold weather, and winter-blend gasoline contains slightly less energy per gallon (roughly 1.7% less) than summer-blend fuel.
How do you convert US MPG to L/100km?
Divide 235.215 by your US MPG value. For example, 30 MPG equals 235.215 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km.
