How to Use the New Jersey (NJ) Child Support Calculator — Appendix IX Guidelines

New Jersey calculates child support on a weekly basis using the Income Shares Model codified in NJ Court Rule 5:6A and Appendix IX. Under this framework, children are entitled to share in the combined net income of both parents—the Parent of Primary Residence (PPR) and the Parent of Alternate Residence (PAR)—as if the household had remained intact.

Formula and Calculation Methodology

PAR Obligation = (Appendix IXF Award × (PAR Net ÷ Combined Net)) – Parenting Time Credit
  • PPR: Parent of Primary Residence (custodial parent where child resides >50% of nights)
  • PAR: Parent of Alternate Residence (non-custodial parent)
  • Parenting Time Credit: Variable food/transportation credit applied when PAR has ≥ 28 overnights/year (104+ for Shared Parenting)

New Jersey distinguishes between two official worksheets depending on the overnight parenting schedule: the Sole Parenting Worksheet (used when the PAR has fewer than 104 overnights per year, i.e., less than 2 nights per week) and the Shared Parenting Worksheet (used when the PAR has 104 or more overnights per year and maintains separate sleeping quarters for the child). Work-related childcare and the child’s portion of health insurance premiums are added proportionally on top of the basic award.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age does child support automatically end in New Jersey?

Under New Jersey’s emancipation statute (N.J.S.A. 2A:17-56.67), child support terminates by operation of law at age 19, unless the child is enrolled full-time in college/post-secondary education or has a disability, in which case it can continue up to age 23.

What is the difference between Sole and Shared Parenting in NJ child support?

If the non-custodial parent (PAR) has the child for 104 or more overnights per year (28% of the year), NJ switches from the Sole Parenting Worksheet to the Shared Parenting Worksheet, which provides a larger reduction for duplicated housing and variable costs.

What happens if our combined net income exceeds $3,600 per week ($187,200/yr)?

The NJ Appendix IX-F schedule caps at $3,600 combined net weekly income. For higher-income families, the court uses the $3,600 schedule amount as the minimum baseline and adds a discretionary supplemental award based on the child’s specific needs.
