How to Calculate Your OSRS Combat Level

In Old School RuneScape (OSRS), your combat level is an aggregate indicator of your player’s combat prowess. It is calculated using a specific mathematical formula that combines your defensive stats (Hitpoints, Defence, and Prayer) with your highest offensive stat (Melee, Ranged, or Magic).

Base = 0.25 × (Defence + Hitpoints + ⌊Prayer / 2⌋)
Melee = 0.325 × (Attack + Strength)
Range/Mage = 0.325 × ⌊1.5 × (Ranged or Magic Level)⌋
Final Level = ⌊Base + MAX(Melee, Range, Mage)⌋

Note: The mathematical ⌊floor⌋ function simply means you round down to the nearest whole number. The game always truncates decimals.

Because the formula only uses your highest offensive combat style, leveling up your secondary offensive skills will not increase your overall combat level until they mathematically surpass your primary combat style. This mechanic is what allows players to build specialized “pure” accounts for PvP.

What is the OSRS Combat Calculator?

The OSRS Combat Calculator is an indispensable tool for players of Old School RuneScape looking to determine their exact combat level. In OSRS, a player’s combat level is a composite number that represents their overall combat prowess, derived from their base stats: Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer.

This calculator is perfect for PvP (Player vs. Player) accounts, such as pures and zerker builds, who need to meticulously plan their stat leveling to stay within specific combat level brackets. By entering your current or target skill levels, the calculator reveals how many levels you can gain in a specific skill before your overall combat level increases.

How to Calculate OSRS Combat Level (The Formula)

The OSRS combat formula is complex. Base combat level is calculated as (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer/2)) × 0.25. The melee contribution is (Attack + Strength) × 0.325. Ranged and Magic contributions are floor(Level × 1.5) × 0.325. Your final combat level is the Base level plus the highest of the Melee, Ranged, or Magic contributions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a “Pure” account?

A “pure” is a specialized account build specifically designed for Player vs. Player (PvP) combat. By keeping their Defence level at 1, pures artificially keep their combat level very low while maximizing their offensive stats (Strength, Ranged, or Magic). This allows them to hit incredibly hard against other players of the same low combat level.

Why does Prayer only give half points?

According to the underlying base formula, your Prayer level is divided by 2 (and rounded down) before being factored into your base defense. This means it generally takes 8 Prayer levels to increase your final combat level by exactly 1 point, compared to taking only 4 levels in Defence or Hitpoints.

How many levels do I need for my next Combat Level?

A general rule of thumb is that 4 levels in Attack, Strength, Hitpoints, or Defence will raise your combat level by 1. For Ranged or Magic, it takes about 3 levels (assuming they are your primary combat style). Prayer requires exactly 8 levels to guarantee a combat level up.

What is the maximum combat level in OSRS?

The maximum combat level in Old School RuneScape is 126. This is achieved by reaching level 99 in Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer.

Why do some players keep their combat level low?

Players known as ‘pures’ intentionally keep their Defence or Prayer levels low to maintain a low overall combat level while maximizing their damage output. This gives them a significant advantage in PvP combat against standard accounts of the same level.

Does Magic or Ranged affect my combat level if I am a Melee build?

Only if your Magic or Ranged contribution surpasses your Melee contribution. The combat formula only takes the highest offensive stat combination (Melee, Ranged, or Magic) into account when calculating your final level.
